Middle power

Like many so-called independents, I find myself tossing and turning at night over what is happening to Canada’s relationship with the United States.
I have lived and worked in the U.S., and still have great friends there. And I agree with some of what Trump is doing -- in particular his attack on the racist, sexist and antisemitic “woke” culture being rammed down the throats of young people at American and Canadian universities. I mean, even some big-name U.S. Democrats seem to be disavowing it now.
Also, if capitalist North America really is as bad as the divisive, dogmatic leftists say it is, why do so many people from other parts of the world want to come to live here?
However, I also think that bully-boy, blowhard Trump’s hateful, ill-informed onslaught on Canada is, to use a fancy word, execrable. It’s so bad it defies accurate description.
The good thing, though, that seems to be coming out of Trump’s totalitarian messaging is that, according to recent opinion polls, Canadians now seem to be experiencing a resurgence of national pride … and a renewed belief in our vastly underrated, resource-driven economy.
Let’s face it, the leftist-driven self-loathing had gone too far -- way too far -- under the woke Trudeau government. It severely weakened us. And we need to get back to being a solid middle power that stands up to bullies ... and punches above its weight.
