The children of the inlet
live by the sea
with eagles, gulls and herons
for company.
Thirst for crawly crabs and coins
pulls them along
the pebble-strewn beach without fear ...
or inhibition.
They splash in the blue-grey waves and
dance in the breeze,
while eying a horizon
of brilliant ease.
Sure, at times they sense the wrath of
nature’s extremes,
whether in the form of storms or
full-on jet streams.
But there are mountains to view,
boulders to leap ...
and patches of crushed, cream shells that
are ankle-deep.
Then, there is the immense, gentle
tug of the tide,
the sun and moon’s variant
of a free ride.
And rarely comes the day when
curious kids say
“the shore’s boring, I’m heading
downtown to play.”
