If you understand why I
sometimes feel my heart will burst
when I think of my anxious,
restless, fastidious mom,
then you’ll appreciate why
she was the most pivotal
person in my life, except
perhaps for my son and wife.
If you recall how hard your
own mother worked to create,
correct, clothe and control you --
and how little she asked in return --
then you, too, may be racked with
guilt you didn’t thank her more
or get to know her better.
You might well feel the same as
I still do at Christmas time
when mom would outdo herself
with a turkey meal cooked to
perfection and designed to
make sure that we never had
any reason to complain …
or ever to forget her.
