I don’t know if she does it for herself,
other women … or some secret suitor.
But I do love how my wife takes pains
to make herself up each fresh, new day
in a glowing, picture-perfect way.
She clearly knows what hasn’t dawned on
modern moviemakers, namely that
the best part of living as a couple
isn’t being able to instantly gild
the lily or put lipstick on a pig …
but slowly to stoke the fires of desire.
And that does require the reassurance
and reflection only a mirror gives.
No, I really don’t know for who my wife
spends her early-morning mirror time.
But it sure does help make our love rhyme.
