The toddler ran down the park trail
ahead of his worried parents.
The back of his blood-red T-shirt
screamed: “Why walk when you can run?”
Right then I was tempted to answer
that tough question with at least one
of my own: “Why bother to run
when sitting still is so much fun?”
In fact, ask both couch potatoes
and high-energy hip-hop dancers,
and you’ll usually find they have
far more questions than answers.
Does the universe have limits?
Do humans truly have free will?
Does life really have a purpose,
or is it a placebo pill?
We know about four dimensions, but
are there others we can’t perceive?
Is the cosmos a singularity …
or just an immense potpourri?
Why hate when you’re able to love?
Why be rude when you can be couth?
If someone says they are lying,
are they telling the exact truth?
The toddler races from his parents
into a vast, unknowable space.
Is he or she propelled by logic ...
or a bold, giant leap of faith?
